Language learning can be a pleasant, if occasionally frustrating endeavour but it need not be costly. From educational podcasts to YouTube channels, from blogs to social media accounts, there is a world of free (or affordable) language learning resources if you know where to look.
I created LinguaHorizons with a few simple goals in mind: to help language lovers on a tight budget track down quality learning materials, to dispense language learning advice to aspiring polyglots, and to document my own language learning successes and misadventures.
About the Author
Hi, I’m Kelly McGuire, the admin and chief content creator for LinguaHorizons. Originally from the tiny nation of Gibraltar, I’ve studied and worked in the United Kingdom, the People’s Republic of China, and Taiwan and have been living and working in the Netherlands since 2006.
My background is in Chinese Studies, international relations, and archaeology and I currently work as a freelance writer, editor, and translator for my own company, Kestrel Text & Translation, a small business that provides translation, content creation, and editing services to clients around the world.
Among other things, I am passionate about wildlife conservation and heritage preservation, an avid reader of biographies and travel writing, slightly obsessed with Star Wars and Star Trek, and a self-styled “language nerd”. My main languages of interest are Dutch, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, French, and Spanish but I have dabbled in a variety of other languages, including Basque, Persian, Romanian, and Modern Greek.
